After your document is prepared for printing (see Publishing), call your ZDOCS consultant to initiate your printing start-up plan. During this stage we will discuss with you the best way to print your product and explain our inventory management plan. As our consultants are non-commission, their goal is to find the most cost-effective method for you to print. Here are a few things to consider: - The size of your book changes the cost of printing your book. The lowest-cost alternative for most products is the 8.5 x 5.5 size book. Your ZDOCS consultant will work with you on what is the best size for your product.
- The quantity you want to print also changes the cost of your book. The more you print, the initial investment is higher, but the price per book is lower. The less you print, the initial investment is lower, but the price per book is higher.

For new products, ZDOCS recommends you go with the lowest initial print run possible. Your ZDOCS consultant will help you pick the best plan. Our basic philosophy is that you should print 250 books for a new book. At 250, the production costs are reasonable and you will have sufficient inventory to go out and promote your book to bookstores and do book signings. For a more tested product, then we recommend 1,000 or more books.
If you want to take a more agressive approach, we can work with you. Some authors who have large distribution chains in place will sometimes run 3,000 or more copies and distribute those copies as part of their marketing plan. The goal our consultants have when working with clients is to determine the correct number of books to print so that more money can be invested in marketing their products than in inventory.
